Indian Gang-Rape Victim Dies

Indian gang-rape victim has died Saturday in Singapore after suffering severe organ failure, the hospital treating her said, in a case that sparked widespread street protests over violence against women.
Authorities in India have been preparing for the possibility her death could ignite more protests after riot police were deployed on the capital’s streets in the wake of the attack amid simmering anger at the daily dangers women face.
The 23-year-old was airlifted to Singapore on Thursday after she was attacked by six men on a bus in New Delhi on December 16, and hit with an iron bar. Some Indian medics had criticised the decision to move her.
“We are very sad to report that the patient passed away peacefully at 4.45 am (2045 GMT) on 29 Dec 2012,” Kelvin Loh, the chief executive of Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Hospital, said in a statement.
“Her family and officials from the High Commission of India were by her side. The Mount Elizabeth Hospital team of doctors, nurses and staff join her family in mourning her loss.”
She had remained in an extremely critical condition since being admitted to the hospital, Loh said, with doctors mounting a last-ditch battle overnight to save her life.
“Despite all efforts by a team of eight specialists in Mount Elizabeth Hospital to keep her stable, her condition continued to deteriorate over these two days,” Loh said.
“She had suffered from severe organ failure following serious injuries to her body and brain. She was courageous in fighting for her life for so long against the odds but the trauma to her body was too severe for her to overcome.
“We are humbled by the privilege of being tasked to care for her in her final struggle.”
The victim was treated in Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital after the attack.
The decision to fly her out of the country by air ambulance was taken at a meeting of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s cabinet on Wednesday and the government had promised to pay all her medical bills.
Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said the government’s only concern was to ensure the victim received “the best treatment possible”.
But Indian newspapers suggested the authorities, who have struggled to contain the nationwide protests over the attack, were keen to have her transferred out of the country.
An unnamed doctor who was part of a team of experts consulted about the transfer told The Hindu newspaper they had only been asked whether it was safe to move her and not whether it was the best course of action.
“The question was not whether there were any deficiencies in treatment that would be met by moving her… She was being given the best possible care,” the doctor was quoted as saying.
Samiran Nundy, chairman of the organ transplant and gastro-surgery department of Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, told the paper the transfer made little sense.
“I just can’t understand why a critically ill patient with infection in blood and body, high grade fever and on the ventilator is being transferred,” he said.
Singh has ordered an official inquiry into the gang-rape and new laws to protect women as well as stiffer penalties for the worst sex crimes.
The government has also announced plans to post the photos, names and addresses of convicted rapists on official websites to publicly shame them. The campaign will begin in Delhi, which has been dubbed India’s “rape capital”.
Shinde also said Delhi police would soon launch a drive to recruit more female officers as a confidence-building measure.
India was rocked by a wave of protests in the week after the attack, prompting authorities to seal off large parts of the capital and to deploy riot police with water cannons tear gas.
The Delhi gang-rape has shone the spotlight on a crime that occurs on a daily basis in India, with most such assaults taking place in rural areas.
Police said on Friday that a 15-year-old schoolgirl had had her throat slit after being gang-raped in the Pali Muqimpure area of Uttar Pradesh state. A hunt has been launched for three youths after the attack the previous day.

Unbelievable Xmas Event!

Hi Peeps,

Seasons Greetings to you all. I hope you guys are enjoying the holiday.

This Celebrating period has always been one to come with
exciting,weird but funfilled event.

As per the fact that am with my sister in Asaba, the beautiful capital
of Delta State,we decided to go out to have fun. She invited some of
her colleague to go along with us.

I have always respected Doctors, mostly because they inspire me so
much. And i respect the effort they put into their work. They are a
special set!

Ok,so on this faithful day, as we set out, my sister's friends kept
complaining about the place my sister was taking them to.
'It was too childish and that we should go to some where better'.
I just wonder why they agreed to come, because my sis mentioned the
place we were going to hang out. If they knew from from the beginning
that it wasn't to their taste, why tag along?

My sis ofcourse wanted to take my little nephew to this place because
she has heard allot about it. At first i kept quiet. You know how it
is, i didn't want to interfere on discussion going on with people who
are older than me, and besides i had to keep my cool and not embarrass
my sis.

They went on complaining and it was quite getting to my nerves. As if
that one wasn't enough, one of the guys started 'chiking' me!
I was surprised and disappointed.

Not because he is a Doctor, but for the fact that he is a friend to my
elder sister and i expected some respect from him. He couldn't be
asking me out right in front of my sis.
Secondly, this guy just met me for the first time, even if he wanted to
ask me out, not on the very first day he saw me.

I always felt Doctors were reasonable people and not rash and
impulsive, but this dude proved me wrong!!

I endured and politely turned him down, just because of the respect i
have for my sis!

I got my silent payback though, when he asked for my number.
Yes! You got it right i gave him a fake number. You wouldn't believe
he took the phone after i inputed the number and asked me to call it
again!!

Thank God it was an old line i gave him. So i was able to call it
again. They finally left us, because according to them 'it was too
childish for them'.

Tip for guys, girls love respect, most especially when it involves
their relative. And girls like guys who exercise patience. Don't just
rush into something when you barely know the person!!

Apart from that really annoying event, my holiday has been splendid! 1Love♥

Covenant University expels 200 students for not attending Church service

About 200 students may have been expelled by the authorities of
Covenant University, Cannanland, Ota,Ogun State, recently for what was
described as “disregard of paramount corevalues.”
Frustrated and angered by the development, some of the affected
students who gave account of what happened battled emotions while
narrating their situations to Saturday Vanguard recently. They however
pleaded with the school authorities to tamper justice with mercy in
order to save their future.
Saturday Vanguard investigation revealed that out of the figure, about
126 were expelled for not attending the ‘departure service’, meant to
sign off from the school after the end of the Semester and
Matriculation of students on November 30. Five other students were
thrown out for smoking while unconfirmed source said additional 60 got
the same fate for violating other rules bordering on the University’s
core values. A few others were given four weeks suspension for failure
to sign the head count that was conducted a couple of weeks earlier.
A letter of expulsion signed by the Registrar, Ntia Ubong,a copy which
was made available to Saturday Vanguard stated that the affected
students contravened Chapter 1, section 30, page 40 of the 2010-2014
Student Handbook.
We gathered that the massive expulsion was predicated on the anger of
the Chancellor, Bishop David Oyedepo who was said to have been
infuriated after seeing students loitering around when they were
supposed to be at the Chapel for the Departure Service.
He was said to have personally chased students to the Chapel and
ordered for a search into all the halls and colleges to fish out those
who did not attend the service.
Several attempts to get the school authorities comment on the issue
proved abortive. The Instituion’s Corporate Affairs Head, Mr Igban
Emmaunel also refused to comment as calls pulled through to him were
unanswered and text messages not replied.
How it happened
A few of the affected students gave account of what happened to
Saturday Vanguard at different points. The similar accountsgo thus:
“On November 30, the last day of the semester, preceding our December
break, there was also a Matriculation for the 100 level students; in
fact some students had their last semester exams on that day, some of
them finished around 3:00pm while the matriculation started around8am.
Some students retired to their rooms to relax whilesome engaged in
some other activities jubilating theend of the semester.
“Some also got drinks from the matriculating students. Even as these
were going on, some students who finished around 3pm retiredto their
halls. By 5pm, they announced that we should get prepared for the
‘Departure service’ which was to start by 8pm. Some students were
already seeing their parents off while some of us were just trying to
relax to get off the stress of the exams.
“Most of us hadn’t gotten through the tiredness of thesleepless nights
of the exams; so, some us stayed back in our rooms. The departure
service is usually aday before we go home andit is usually presided
over by the Chancellor. Before the commencement of the service, they
used to lock up the main doors of the halls so as to prevent cases of
theft. I was not bothered since there were a lot of us in the hall.
Some minutes past 8pm, they switched off the light and all of us in
the hall went into our rooms. Because of the darkness andthe cold, I
slept off immediately.”
He continued: “The persistent knocks on the door woke me up and I
realised that they had come to search for people who had not come to
service. Before I realised what was going on, I found myself with
other students numbering about 30. They took down our names and
counted us to make sure that no one was omitted. They said the
Chancellor wasat the service and we refused to come. I heard them
talking about other halls and they asked us to wait. I didn’t take it
seriouslybecause I never believed in my widest imagination that we
would be expelled. We were later asked to go to our various halls.
“Some of those who went into hiding were lucky as they were not found.
Shortly, those who went for the service returned and told us there was
poor attendance at the Chapel and how students were diving in through
the windows, scampering for seats. In fact, one narrated to us how the
Chancellor jumped through the window to vent his anger on some
students who had jumped in,” he stated.
Another expelled student also gave similar account of the incident. “I
couldn’t go to the service because, I wasnot feeling well which was as
a result of the stress of the exams we had just finished. After a
while, I managed to go but I heard that they started driving people
back around 7:30pmwhile the service was to start around 8pm. I was
surprised because the rule was that you’ve got to be seated 15minutes
to the service.
Again, it was never made compulsory, but they tried to get students
out of the halls to prevent cases of theft. So, because I was not
feeling well, I went back to my room because I needed to rest for a
while.
“I thought it was a joke when they said we are in forexpulsion
because we failed to come for departure service. I have never done
anything contrary to the school laws. I have never faced any panel
before and neither did I have any unpleasant case in my file. I never
thought it was real until letters were handed to me the following
morning.”
Giving account of how letters were handed out to them, the visibly
troubled student said: “By 6am, they announced the names of those who
were caught in halls and colleges. Usually after the departure
service, one can sign out from there and go but because it endedlate
and no one could travel, students had to wait till the following
morning. But the hall officer told those of us whose names were
written down that if we leave, we should be considered gone from the
university forever. That gave us an insight into what was likely to
come as punishment. By 7:45am, we were called once again to
godownstairs for our letters. Those who collected theirs before mine
were crying and I wondered what the punishment could be until I read
the letter stating I was expelled from the university.”
But stampeding them to congregate for service and then expelling those
who did not come is a decision taken too far. For me, if there was
poor attendance, I think the authorities have aresponsibility. They
have notbeen fair in putting the service so close to the examination.
Even God will not do that.”
He however commended theChancellor, Dr. Oyedepo on his vision towards
the education of Nigeria children especially when the government
institutions are failing, but urging him to tamper justice with mercy.
Another parent who was afraid of the press noted that he was still
studying the situation and would not want to comment but noted that
he was reliably informed that some group of parents made frantic
efforts to meet with the Chancellor on the issue but without success.
It was not clear the level of the efforts made. He further hinted
thatsome students have not toldtheir parents about their expulsion,
still hoping that the issue would be resolved.
He lamented that his child had been having sleepless nights, going
through mental torture unjustifiably. “I agree that discipline must
be instilled in the students but it should not be aimed at destroying
the life of the students. Expulsion is too great a punishment for non
attendance of a departure service, without even a warning especially
when thestudents hitherto, had not been found wanting,” he stated.
What the Student Handbook says
The Covenant University Corevalues border on Spirituality,Possibility
Mentality, CapacityBuilding, Integrity, Responsibility, Diligence and
Sacrifice. On the spirituality aspect, it states: “The Christian
ethos underguard our activities and conducts at all time and every
student of Covenant University is expected to exhibit character traits
and dispositions of a Jesus-centered heritage. The Jesus– factor
centered approach to all issues is non-negotiable and central in the
pursuit of our mandate in raising a new generation of leaders and
inthe realization of the objectives of our purpose.
To this extent therefore, students will be committed to maintaining a
high level of spirituality and shall act insuch manner as to
facilitate their spiritual growth as wellas work out ways to evolve
and implement a spiritual development plan. Attendance at Chapel
Services is a compulsory part of students’ spiritual development
where a bible and notebook are essential kits for the service.
Students are expected to demonstrate a deep reverence for God at all
times.”

The school declines comment

Several attempts were made to get the school authorities comment on
the issue. The institution’s Corporate/Public Affairs Officer, Mr
Igban Emmanuel Kalu declined comment. At first, several calls were
pulled through to him but he refused to pick his calls. When the
reporter persisted,he later picked but said he was driving and could
not answer any question. But few hours later, other calls pulled to
him were unanswered. A text message was sent to his phone and up to
the time of writing this report, he did not reply.

I’m not aware —Prof JuliusOkojie, NUC Executive Secretary

The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, NUC,
Prof Julius Okojie said he has not been briefed on the matter.
Prof Okojie stated this during a telephone conversation Saturday
Vanguard had with him a few days ago. “I am not aware of any expulsion
by Covenant University; I will ask the school authorities. Right now,
I am not in Abuja, I left Abuja few days ago and until I return to
Abuja and find out details about the matter, I cannot comment on it,”
he said.

Anybody Who Knows Osaze Should Advise Him – Ikpeba

victor_ikpebaFormer Nigerian international, Victor Ikpeba, has expressed disappointment in Osaze Odemwingie’s recent outbursts on Twitter and the attacks on his person by the player.
While denying reports that he also retaliated Odemwingie’s attacks via a psuedo Twitter account bearing his name and image, Ikpeba said, “I don’t have a Twitter account, my organisation, Supersport, knows that. I would rather spend my precious time discussing with my family rather than engage anybody on Twitter or Facebook.”
Ikpeba further decried the bad precedent Odemwingie was setting for future players which he termed ‘dangerous.’
“People close to him (Odemwingie) should advise him. I’m waiting for the federation to issue a statement on this matter. They must take action because this is a dangerous precedent because if they don’t, others will do the same thing in future.
“How can he just go about attacking coaches, ex-players and even his colleagues like that? I played for Nigeria, I was criticised but I moved on. I was not picked for the 2002 World Cup, I moved on. Why can’t he move on,” he queried.
“In life, people will be critical of you, not everybody can agree with you. That is why credit should be given to players like Taye Taiwo and Obafemi Martins.
“They have played for this country for long, but they were omitted and they are not complaining. That’s good behaviour” the Supersport soccer pundit concluded.

Odemwingie may face disciplinary actions for comments on Twitter

Osaze Odemwingie recently lashed out at coach Stephen Keshi and
members of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) on his twitter page
for not being included in the African Nations Cup squad .

A top NFF official told reporters this week that Osaze would not be
allowed to go unpunished for the comments he made on Twitter. He said
the case will be referred to the federation's disciplinary committee
to investigate and make recommendationsto the executive committee for
the next line of action. The NFF rep said they plan to make a
statement with the action they will take against Osaze.

Meanwhile, Osaze has concluded and accepted that his days with Super
Eagles are over

“It is clear now that my days with the Super Eagles are over as I

expected to be left out of the ANC squad because we have had a few
issues before. I played a very good 10 years from 2002 to 2012 but I
don'twant to be witha coach who doesn’t want me.I still love mycountry
and care about the football but I already wasn't feeling the way I
would have liked to feel. Lastmonth I spoke with Keshi because I
didn’t play in a few games with the national team and he said my body
language didn't show that I wanted toplay for the team but body
language for the Nigerian coach is that you have to be calling him all
the time and greeting him but for me football is an official thing,”
Osaze said

The thing i really find funny is,what are the punishment the NFF hope
to dole out on Osaze, when he has clearly accepted his fate?

It is really disappointing,if Osaze's allegaions are true!

How Gov Wada of Kogi SUV Crashed, ADC Dies On Impact

gov-wada-and-late-adcBut for providence, Nigeria would have recorded the death of another State Governor in a space of two weeks, as Governor Idris Wada of Kogi State, yesterday, narrowly escaped a ghastly motor accident.
The accident, however claimed the life of his aide-de-camp (ADC), Assistant Suprintent of Police (ASP) Idris Mohammed, who died on the spot due to impact.
The accident occurred at about 2.30 pm yesterday at Elete Emi Woro between Prime Polytechnic and Salem University on the Ajaokuta-Lokoja Road.
The governor was returning from the annual Igala Education Conference at Anyigba in Dekina Local Government Area of the state. Wada was reportedly on his way to Lokoja to attend a Juma’at prayer when the accident occurred.
An eyewitness of the crash said the governor’s Jeep in the convoy had a burst tyre and somersaulted severally before it plunged into an uncompleted building.
The source added that the governor, his orderly and his driver sustained serious injuries, while his ADC lost his life on the spot.
He was rushed to the State Specialist Hospital, Lokoja where doctors worked frantically to stabilise him.
The State Commissioner for Information, Bologi Yabagi, confirmed that the governor was rushed to the hospital, in Lokoja for treatment.
Wada is the third governor to be involved in an accident in the past two months after Governor Danbaba Suntai of Taraba State, who was seriously injured when a plane, he flew, crashed in Yola, Adamawa State on October 25, 2012. Governor Patrick Yakowa of Kaduna State alongside the former National Security Adviser (NSA), Gen. Patrick Azazi, died in a plane crash in Bayelsa State on December 15, 2012.
Wada’s predecessor, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris was among the first associates of the governor that visited him in hospital yesterday.
LEADERSHIP WEEKEND gathered that after being stabilised at the Specialist Hospital, Lokoja, an air ambulance was brought to evacuate the governor to a private hospital in Abuja.’’
Though his aides maintained that he was in stable condition, they were silent on his exact location.
There were speculations that he might be flown abroad for treatment directly from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja
Against earlier rumour that the governor would be taken to the National Hospital, Abuja for treatment before he is flown abroad, LEADERSHIP WEEKEND learnt that Wada was rushed to a hospital owned by his younger brother in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
For several hours yesterday, reporters laid siege to the National Hospital, waiting for the arrival of the ambulance, which was to bring Wada to the facility.
Responding to a call by LEADERSHIP WEEEKEND, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Richard Elesho, insisted that Wada was in a stable condition.
He said: “I am very happy to announce to you that the governor is not dead. He is not dead at all. I don’t want to tell you where he is. The governor is in a very stable and healthy condition.
“It is unfortunate that we lost the ADC in the auto crash. I have also heard people saying the driver died. No, it is not true. There were just three people in the car, the governor, the ADC and the driver. The ADC died on the spot, but the governor and driver are in stable conditions.”
Reacting to the reporter’s insistence on the governor’s whereabouts, Elesho queried: “Why do you want me to tell you where he is? If I am bold enough as a colleague to let you know that we lost the ADC, why do I have to lie to you? The governor is alive, hale and hearty, but I don’t have to disclose the exact location of the governor to you; must I? I only have to tell you as a colleague that the governor is alive. He had the first treatment at the Specialist Hospital, Lokoja. After that we left the Specialist Hospital for the Government House. But I don’t have to tell you his exact location at the moment.”
The Public Relations Officer of the National Hospital, Abuja, Mr. Haastrup Tayo, said Governor Wada was not in the hospital as at 9 pm when he spoke with LEADERSHIP WEEKEND. He however did not rule out the possibility of the governor being moved to the hospital last night.
In a statement last night, Yabagi said: “The convoy of the Governor of Kogi State, Capt. Idris Ichalla Wada has been involved in a ghastly accident. The governor survived the road mishap and is in stable condition. Sadly however, the governor’s Aide de Camp (ADC), Idris Mohammed, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, died on the spot.
“The accident occurred Friday (yesterday) afternoon at Emi Woro Village, about 12 kilometres into the state capital, in between Prime Polytechnic and Salem University, in Ajaokuta Local Government. The convoy was returning from the annual Igala Education Summit, which the governor declared opened at the state university in Anyigba.”
Meanwhile, workers and security personnel at the Government House wore mournful look as they gathered in groups, discussing the incident in hushed tones.
A senior police officer attached to the Government House, who sought anonymity, said the late ADC was “an epitome of humility, compassion and a lover of his job.”
He disclosed that Mohammed treated both officers and juniors alike as he was different in all ramifications from those before him.
“He was an easy going officer, he never disturbed anybody. In fact, if one was sad and met him, one will be consoled, “ the officer said.
Also last night, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) expressed shock over the accident involving Governor Wada and called on its stalwarts to observe minutes of prayers for the governor’s speedy recovery.
PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, said “Our great party is yet to recover from a rude shock arising from a recent similar incident. We therefore, wish to direct all our members to observe compulsory minutes of prayers for the speedy recovery of Governor Wada and to spare the party from further painful incidents,” Metuh said.
The party prayed for the repose of the ADC’s soul asking ‘‘God to grant his family the fortitude to bear the loss.’’

Gas Station Attendant Strippéd, Sacked Over N428 Tip

A gas station attendant at a Dubai gas station (name withheld) has been sacked for pocketing a Dh10 (N427.84) tip. Santosh Kumar, 24, said he was terminated on the first week of his job after his supervisor found Dh10 hidden inside his socks.
According to him, attendants at fuel stations run by the Dubai-based Emirates General Petroleum Corporation are routinely strip-searched for tips.
“I was subjected to this humiliation on my first day at work. My supervisor took me to a storeroom after duty hours and asked me to remove my shirt and vest. Then he gestured me to take off my pants. I was near tears. When I refused, he ordered me to jump five times to shake off any coins I might be hiding,” recalls Kumar.
Many other attendants confirmed undergoing the demeaning treatment, saying their company policy forbids them from pocketing tips.
“Last week, there was a shortage of Dh100 (N4278.40) at our station. All of us were taken to the store room and stri*ped unclad by the supervisor. He even asked us to remove our underwear. It was so shameful I wanted to die,” said Bashir who works as an attendant at an Emarat (not real name) gas station in Dubai.
The attendants said as per their company policy, all tips collected by staff should be surrendered to the company.
“They made it clear during our training. But since our salaries are low, the temptation is always there,” said Kumar who joined the company on a Dh1,000 (N42784.00) salary.
Fuel station attendants get between Dh40 (N1711.36) and Dh80 (N3422.72) in customer tips daily. But they rarely get to take it home.
Commenting on the issue, Emarat said their employees are well aware of the rules and regulations that they are expected to follow from the time they are hired.
“Our stance on tips is addressed and explained during the training that follows after a staff is recruited and is a part of our internal operating procedures. We expect our employees to deliver the highest level of customer service standard and do not want tips to cause any discrimination or bias in the service offered to customers. The corporation goes to great lengths to ensure that our staff are treated with love and care and any little money generated as tips is reinvested into staff welfare and entertainment funds,” Emarat said in a statement to XPRESS.
However, attendants claimed instances of staff being frisked and caught trying to sneak out with tips are routine. “You are made to stand like a thief as they dig into your shirt, pants and even socks after a day’s work,” said another attendant, Rahman.
According to lawyers no company has the right to strip search employees, adding that the practice violates human rights.
“These acts are considered immoral and illegal as they violate human dignity and honour. Nobody has the right to conduct strip-searches as it is a violation of human rights. Only the police are authorised to do it.
“Those who underwent such an act should complain to the police immediately,” said Mona Yahya Mohammad, legal adviser, Bin Ismail Advocates and Legal consultants.
Fuel depot staff alleges the supervisors at each depot are authorised by the company to frisk their juniors. Strip-searches are carried out randomly to confiscate tips not surrendered by the staff. In addition, there are spot checks at fuel pumps when workers are serving customers.
“There are surprise checks even on buses taking us back to our accommodation and people get caught if they managed to get away in the first round of checking,” said Vaishna, another staff.
But the humiliating practice of strip search and rigorous monitoring are not deterring the staff from making a few extra bucks through tips. “We keep devising new methods to hide the money. We are doing it not because we are dishonest. We genuinely believe we are entitled to the tips we get for our good service,” said Vaishna.
Fuel distributors like Epco, Enoc and Abu Dhabi-based Adnoc do not have similar ‘no tips’ policy and their staff told XPRESS they are never frisked. [XPRESS, GN
